kenn3d > For the first time, our prior nest fledglings have participated in all aspects of feeding, housekeeping, guarding, and even fledging their siblings in a subsequent nest.
kenn3d > This morning we saw a 1st-nester actually enter the box. We were surprised to see this behavior, but even more surprised to notice that Mr.B was apparently watching him do this too!
As the morning progressed it became clear...
Not only are the fledglings bringing bugs specifically to feed to the nestlings... they are doing so with the full approval of their parents!
Thruout this afternoon and evening, we have observed the fledges repeatedly bringing insects and worms to the box, and either feeding the babies themselves, or passing the food to each other or to their parents IN the box!
There is absolutely no doubt about it, the feeding of the 3rd-nest chicks has become a family affair.
kenn3d > This video was shot on the morning of Day 11, and spans approximately 7 min of activity with the whole family feeding the nestlings in assembly line fashion during the first mealworm feeding of the day.
kenn3d > We are very happy now to report the successful fledging of our 3rd brood of nesting season '09 ... five more precious little Bluebirds are in the trees! :)
And for those who have not had the thrill of experiencing a fledging first-hand, or who simply never tire of seeing this exciting event... we have captured it on video.
This is a "highlights" reel and shows both the actual first flights of all 5 nestlings, as well as some very humorous interactions. But perhaps more importantly, it documents the great extent to which our whole Family Blue worked together during this 3rd nesting. This was the first time we've witnessed the fledglings from the prior nests helping to feed and care for their siblings in a subsequent nest. We are thrilled to have seen and captured their major participation in this fledging also... which has made it an even more joyous event for us.
kenn3d > Seven fledglings (from nests 1 and 2) finish off the evening mealworms in a hurry... leaving 1 worm for a Carolina Wren. :)
